Present Education system is losing focus- Is this true????
This is an incident I very clearly remember as the one that shook me so bad that I started wondering as to what is wrong with this world. This was the time when the World woke up to the news of death of Princess of Wales –Lady Diana. We saw the news clip on television screen how paparazzi were hounding the princess for their news bite and how tragically she died in that accident. Even in her death everyone around was desperate to have his/her 5 minutes of fame. Same when the twin towers were brought down or when Kerala faced its destructive flood or very recently when a train mowed down 57 people on railway track in Amritsar
Educated people busy recording events on mobile phones instead of helping injured people, People commenting on the wealthy Keralites refusing help, owing to their pride or engineers who were trained pilots also, not thinking twice before bringing the twin towers down and taking away numerous innocent lives with their act. These are a few out of numerous such incidents which bring me to the revelation that probably education system today has lost its focus.
What is the purpose of education? Is it to have a flourishing career later in one’s life or earn more money or more fame for oneself or is it something else.
Once our Ex President and renowned academician Dr. S. Radhakrishnan said, that the “The troubles of the whole world including India are due to the fact that education has become a mere intellectual exercise and not the acquisition of moral and spiritual values.
Education has very specific nine aims and they areKnowledge Aim, Vocational Aim, Character Aim, Cultural Aim, All-round Development Aim, Complete Living Aim, Spiritual Aim, Citizenship Aim and Democratic Aim of Education. Out of all these, people now a day are focusing more on knowledge and vocational aim and that exactly is the reason for all the malice in the world and corruption of young minds so visible in day to day acts of children around.
Children, staging their own abduction to extract money from their parents. Young students, slitting throats of their friends on petty issues. Adolescent children creating a ruckus on roads or rioting are all glaring examples of our mistake in imparting education of the right kind to young learners. A society with material goals has lost its touch of the spiritual aspect of it. Quality of life per say has nothing to do with the emotional or spiritual wellbeing anymore but is increasingly associated with material possession only.
Taking time out for meditation, participation in cultural or spiritual events or sports activities all are meant to fulfill the cultural, spiritual aim and most importantly building of character and leading a complete life with a well groomed all round personality aim of education. Focusing only on the knowledge part without paying attention to its link with humanity or emotional aspects of it is incomplete education. Going towards the vocational part with the sole aim of having a career again detaches one from the real world and then lead to unhappiness in life, thus again incomplete inadequate and lost education.
Today’s learner  needs to focus along with the primary objective of knowledge and vocational aim of education to character building and all round development of personality to lead a purposeful life later. Otherwise the events will change but reaction of the observer will remain the same. Without any concern to values no man can turn into a happy productive individual. Today’s education system thus need to streamline itself in a way that brings in all nine components into the practice to fulfill the actual objective of imparting education.
Stay focused towards the nine aims of education only is the way out to the chaos we all call Life in today’s time
